COSATU Northern Cape PEC Statement

The Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) of COSATU in the Northern Cape converged for its first PEC meeting on Tuesday, 20th November 2018, since the 04th Provincial Congress.

The PEC met to present an account of work done since the 04th Provincial Congress and to develop a programme that will direct its work for the oncoming year (2019).

The PEC noted and it is intrigued by maturity, humility and unity that exist among the union, workers and the leadership in the province.

Following robust discussions and deliberations, the PEC resolved as follows:-

ORGANISATIONAL

” Unity in COSATU is sacrosanct and should at all times not to be artificial.
” Put into place instruments to fast track the implementation of the 04th Congress resolutions.
” Revival of the Joint Mandatory Committee (JMC).
” Strengthen the COSATU locals across the province in order to enable them to run with campaigns at the local level.
” All identified campaigns to be implemented and carried out, PEC to conduct periodic assessments and monitor progress in this regard.
” Internalise the federation’s “One Sector One Union, One Country One Federation” slogan.
” Address workers’ issues at both the Sol Plaatje Municipality and the NC Speaker’s Office.
” Work tirelessly to assist SAMWU on the current organisational challenges and the threat that is posed by the employer at Sol Plaatje municipality.

POLITICAL

  • When deploying comrades, we should take into account the type of leader and scrutinise their profile in order to ensure that, credible people are placed at all levels of government.
  • There is a need to further engage the SACP regarding the reconfiguration of the Alliance and contestation of popular State Power.
  • Build strong SANCO structures.
  • We have recommitted to strengthen the Alliance and build unity towards the 2019 general elections and beyond.

SOCIO-ECONOMIC

” The threats of job losses at all sectors of our economy after the Presidential Job Summit have shattered the hopes of workers in terms of the job losses, the Federation should therefore take a bold step in combating these scourge.
” Push for the amendment of the BCEA & the LRA to make retrenchment expensive, propose that the severance pay be increased to 4 weeks for every completed year of service.
” We should strengthen our campaign against high prices of electricity and further denounce the IPP’s effect on employment and electricity pricing. NB! We are going to embark on Campaigns against the effects of IPP’s.
” There is a need to advance our resolution on Alcohol abuse thus, we urge all cadres deployed to different board, to influence the board in ensuring that, there is control over the number of liquor licenses issued in the Province.
” Public Sector – Employer to send people with mandate to the bargaining chambers avoid undue mass actions
” Establishment of COSATU Provincial sub-committee on Socio-Economic issues BUT also to deal with Corruption.
” We are going to march against to the Premier’s Office and SAPS on Tuesday, 27th November 2018 to highlight the scourge of Gender Based Violence.

INTERNATIONAL

We therefore recommit ourselves to rally behind the federation’s international solidarity work covering the following countries:

i. Swaziland
ii. Venezuela
iii. CUBA
iv. Western Sahara
v. Palestine

Lastly, the PEC resolved to forge solidarity and establish relationship with workers in NAMIBIA, a process that should start in January 2019
