COSATU Gauteng ‘s statement on the Competition Commission’s report on Gautrain

COSATU Gauteng is vindicated by the conclusion of the Competition Commission that Gautrain was a big policy mistake, which reflects class divide in our country. The working-class toils daily to the benefit of the elites in this province and the country. The working class is subjected to the neglected rail system, but their hard-earned salaries is used to subsidize the rich. The working class is paying R1.6 billion per year for Gautrain, whilst they are subjected to the moving coffins operated by Metrorail.

The federation is calling for the Gauteng Provincial Government and Premier, David Makhura to urgently act on the recommendation by the Competition Commission to take over Metrorail and integrate it with Gautrain to run a single system that doesn’t separate people according to class. Failure to heed this call will leave COSATU with no option but to mobilize members, taxi operators, non-governmental organizations, students’ movements and society against this elite policy position that is constitutionally flawed.
