COSATU mourns the passing of SADSAWU General Secretary Comrade Myrtle Witbooi

The Congress of South Africa Trade Unions (COSATU) dips its revolutionary banner following the passing of Comrade Myrtle Witbooi, the founding General Secretary of the SA Domestic Service and Allied Workers Union (SADSAWU). Comrade Myrtle lost a courageous battle to cancer. We send our heartfelt to her family, friends and organization.

She was an indefatigable champion of domestic worker’s rights at home and internationally, including at the International Labour Organisation (ILO). The trade union movement has lost a tireless fighter for social justice and a fearless warrior, who inspired us. She was an embodiment of selflessness and service.

She was present thirty-seven years ago when COSATU was born in the belly of the Apartheid beast to fight for decent wages, improved working conditions and freedom from oppression.

She kept us all honest with her firm guidance and presence; she always reminded everyone that the best leaders are those that are ready and willing to serve the people. We pledge in our own way to carry on her mission and to bring an end to the exploitation of domestic workers and other vulnerable workers.

Hamba kahle Cde Myrtle hamba kahle, your spirit and legacy will live forever!
