Key Focus on Agreement in the Nomination and Election of
Health and Safety Representatives

ILO Constitution sets forth the principle that workers should be protected from sickness, disease and injury arising from their employment. Yet for millions of workers the reality is very different. The
ILO estimates that 2.02 million people die each year and South Africa is not in an exceptional situation.

non-adherence to issues of health and safety at the workplace.
COSATU acknowledges the importance of occupational health and safety, and have realised that there is insufficient adherence to the Occupational Health and Safety Act by the employers.

There is a need to campaign and mobilise our members around the right to nominate and elect health and safety representatives, and further election of a strong and effective health and safety committee, whose role is to make sure that workers are protected from unsafe
conditions in the workplace.

Very important is adherence by employer, effective monitoring and
