COSATU mourns the death of soccer legend Philemon Masinga

The Congress of South African Trade Unions joins millions of people in South Africa and around the world to mourn the death of soccer legend Philemon Masinga. We send our heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues and friends. This soccer icon will be sorely missed and greatly remembered for his devotion and passion for the sport of soccer.

Philemon Masinga was not just a soccer player but was a pioneer and a trendsetter and formed part of that group of players ,who played in some big European Leagues after the fall of apartheid. He played a pivotal role in helping Bafana Bafana to conquer Africa and also qualify for their first World Cup in history.

His footballing skills gained him great respect across the world. He was a pioneer and inspired many youngsters to pursue the sport of soccer and also fly the African and South African flag high.

We hope that a new generation of soccer stars will keep the legacy of Philemon Masinga and others like him alive and carry the baton going forward. He will be greatly missed.
