The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA) in KwaZulu-Natal welcomes the appointment of the Department of the Head of Department (HOD) by the provincial Department of Health, which we hope will bring about certainty and decisiveness in the office.
It has been over two years since the Department has been having an acting HOD in KZN, which has hindered a lot of issues due to lack of decisiveness in that office.
The new HOD is appointed at the time when the Department is faced with many burning issues such as the gross shortage of health professionals and increase in litigations due to many contributory factors like burnt out of staff due to heavy workload, poor infrastructure, and lack of safety of workers in the workplaces.
Lack of consequence management in those facilities where there were high rates of poor security and mixing of patients in other facilities leading to patients’ safety being compromised.
We hope the appointment of a permanent HOD will bring about the much-needed stability and, most importantly, decision-making by the office so that the many issues affecting workers on the ground could be dealt with speedily.
