The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU) wishes her sister union and affiliate of COSATU, the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POCRU), a successful 9th National Congress to be convened from 5-9 November in Durban. The Congress will be concluded with a rally at Curries Fountain to mark the 30th anniversary of this giant union.
The Congress theme: “30 years of working-class consciousness defending workers’ rights and building a self-sustainable union” is a true testimony of what POPCRU has stood and fought for in its 30 years of existence.
This Congress takes place at a time when public servants in the safety and security cluster work under trying circumstances in the face of increasing workloads while fewer vacancies are filled nor created.
The Congress should spend time deliberating on the safety and recent attacks of her members, in particular, police officers, and come up with concrete resolutions to respond to this.
We hope the Congress will reinvigorate the Union to continue to fight for workers’ rights in the face of an onslaught from Treasury who no longer see public servants as providers of valuable service to society but “parasites” who bloat the public service wage bill.
Long live POPCRU, long live!
