The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) in the Kimberley Region is outraged and disturbed by how KEM JV is continuing to treat its members.
We have been engaging the company on what we view as a heartless and inhuman act of unilaterally cutting salaries of our members by 12,5% without consulting them.
“The current development is that they are now heading towards to cut the members’ salaries and changes the conditions of employment of our members drastically,” said Cornelius Manhe, NUM Kimberley Regional Secretary.
“To make the matter worse yesterday the 14th of November 2019, we were called into what is called consultation meeting, but to our surprise when we attend the so-called meeting, the company has invited everybody, including the minority union and the non-union employees,” Manhe added.
The General Manager Mr. Howard Marsden made a pronouncement that he is not discussing anything with any union, but he is sharing the company’s view on cutting salaries of our members.
As NUM we made it clear to him, that we cannot allow being ambushed and undermined because we have collective agreements that must be observed. We called upon this company to withdraw their intention and do the correct thing and stop to threaten and demoralize our members.
NUM will continue to defend its members through this tough times and ensure there is justice with the arrogance of this nature.
