COSATU will present its proposals for an Eskom Social Compact to the Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises, at Parliament from 09h30, Wednesday, 04 March 2020. Eskom poses the greatest threat to workers’ jobs, the economy, state, and South Africa’s sovereignty. It is buckling under unmanageable debt levels, maintenance backlogs, industrial-scale levels of looting, overpricing by private sector contractors, changing economic structural shifts and climate change.
If Eskom can collapse not only will its 44 000 workers and their pensions are destroyed but in fact, all South African jobs and pensions will be devastated. Load shedding is costing the economy R2 billion each day.
There is a limited window within which to intervene. This period is now. The intervention must be based upon a social compact binding government, business, labour and community to all contribute towards saving our most critical SOE.
COSATU is willing to play its role. We hope other social partners and society will do so too.
