SADTU Gauteng is outraged by the rape and brutal killing of a Grade 9 girl, Simphiwe Sibeko who was a learner at Aurora Girls High school. She went to the local shop on Thursday, 2 April 2020 and never returned to her home. Regrettably, she was found dead in a bush at Emndeni Extension, Soweto.
This is another pandemic which requires the same level of unity and energy that is dedicated to the fight against COVID-19. These barbaric acts not only impose unwarranted immeasurable pain and trauma to the learner’s family, it also instills fear and panic in girl children and women.
We extend our sincere condolences to her family and the entire Aurora Girls High school community and commend the Gauteng Department of Education for deploying the necessary counseling services to the family.
We call on all government and all institutions to build on the current momentum and wage a collaborative relentless fight against gender based violence. SADTU advances I AM A SCHOOL FAN campaign through we which we seeks to mobilise all communities to drive a collaborative combat against the scourge of violence.
