COSATU Free State is concerned by the South African Post Office’s failure to ensure that all of its branches are safe for workers and clients.SAPO plays a big role in distributing social security grants to needy beneficiaries. We are disturbed to note that some branches of SAPO have forced workers back to workplaces that have not undergone any deep cleaning and sanitization. This is unacceptable.
We support our affiliated union the Communication Workers Union (CWU) in pushing for SAPO to comply with the provision of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and other labour guidelines.
All operations in SAPO outlets that have not been deep cleaned and sanitized should be stopped. Our records show that many of these outlets are non-compliant with the preconditions of making the workplaces safe.
We agree with CWU that the national office of SAPO needs to intervene fast or workers would withhold their labour and refuse to perform their duties in an unsafe work environment.
