POPCRU statement on Nelson Mandela Day

The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) will be joining millions across South Africa and the rest of the world in marking the Nelson Mandela International Day tomorrow, the 18th of July 2020.

The 18th of July was declared by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) as the International Mandela Day, and this commemoration comes at a time when the world is faced by a pandemic with which to overcome needs exemplary role models to emulate.

Nelson Mandela and others were such characters whom through their dedication and commitment towards the attainment of a free and democratic society, persevered under difficult circumstances.

It is under these difficult times when our country and the rest of the world finds itself that we draw lessons from the bravery and discipline demonstrated by Mandela and his peers that we work together in combating the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic in securing a better future for generations to come.

It is our generational duty to survive beyond this passing era, and for this task, we must continue in educating each other to obey and abide by the lockdown prescripts in curbing the spread of this pandemic.

We wish all South Africans a thought-provoking and peaceful International Mandela Day.
