The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) Free State supports SACCAWU Strike at Sky Country Butchery in Thaba Nchu.These workers are demanding to be paid a danger allowance for the period which they have been at work during lockdown and when the sales had dramatically increased.

We support this call from workers that given the increase in the infection rates across the country and particularly in Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality. These workers deserve to be provided with safe and reliable transport between the workplace and home, the same way that white scab labour is provided with transport to break the strike.

This employer has made super profits during lockdown and workers are right to demand that they be provided with quarantine and treatment facilities, as the state resources are buckling under pressure.

We are also disturbed by the incidents of racisms that are rife at Sky Country. The unequal treatment between black and white employees is unacceptable. We warn all those who are used as scab labour to refrain from that practice because we will not allow it.
