COSATU Free State denounces the heavy-handed approach employed by the South African Police Services against members of our affiliated union the South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union (SACCAWU) at Sky Country Butchery in Thaba Nchu.
The workers were peacefully picketing and demonstrating within the demarcated area in front of the premises of their employer, when they experienced harassment and intimidation from the SAPS members deployed.
The conduct of the police was provocative and unacceptable. Many workers were arrested despite the attempts by union leaders to diffuse the situation.
Some of these workers were charged and released and told to appear on 28 July 2020. This was unnecessary and prejudicial.
We call upon SAPS to respect the rights of the workers and not pay the role of a private militia for intransigent employers. Arresting peaceful protesters is not enforcing the law but is police harassment.
