COSATU mourns the passing of a COSATU CEC member and SAMWU President, Comrade John Dlamini

The Congress of South African Trade Union mourns the untimely passing of one its Central Executive Committee members, SAMWU President, Comrade John Dlamini after a short illness. We send our heartfelt condolences to SAMWU, his family, and friends.

Cde Dlamini started his working life as a police officer and worked for the Umgeni local municipality. He led municipal workers at a provincial level as a Regional Secretary and Deputy Provincial Chairperson and led the federation as a COSATU Deputy Provincial Chairperson in the province of KZN.

He was later elected to serve SAMWU at a national level becoming its president last year. We were looking forward to him leading the rebuilding process of our union and also helping the federation to navigate these perilous times of an economic and health crisis caused by COVID-19.

Today is a very sad day for the federation and we pledge to continue in his honour to push ahead with the work of building SAMWU. We will remember his unwavering loyalty to the organisation and his commitment to the struggle for the emancipation of the working class.

We call on SAMWU members to honour Cde John Dlamini by building a stronger and united SAMWU that leads from the front in improving the lives of workers and the poor.

May his soul rest in peace.
