COMMUNICATION WORKERS UNION FORGE AHEAD WITH NATIONAL INDUSTRIAL ACTION AT SABC

Communication Workers Union (CWU) learned about a statement issued by the SABC Board in the early hours of the day (20th November 2020) via media. The statement briefly indicates that it would suspend the section 189 process for a period of 7 days to allow stakeholders to engage. CWU is party to this process and it has formally launched its dispute through the CCMA, and has written to the Public Broadcaster formally to inform them about our demands. We would expect SABC to respect the process and communicate through relevant channels on this matter, and therefore we do not treat this statement as official or carrying any weight. This further demonstrates the level of arrogance that the SABC board and management has      towards all the key stakeholders. Therefore, the action set for today continues as planned, and we expect all workers to heed to our call and down tools at 12 noon today. Our demands are clear and are as follows:

1.       Withdraw all the dismissal letters issued to workers with immediate effect

2.       Abandon the retrenchments process completely

We trust this will clear any confusion that might have been created.

The end
