The General Secretary of the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (NEHAWU), Cde Zola Saphetha, will deliver a memorial lecture on the life and times of Comrade Harry Gwala on Friday in Pietermaritzburg.
The late comrade Harry Gwala who was fondly known as the “Lion of the Midlands” was a leader of the African National Congress (ANC), the South African Communist Party (SACP) and a trade unionist who organised workers in the chemical, construction, and rubber industries.
At the 80th anniversary of the ANC on 8 January 1992, Comrade Gwala was awarded the Isitwalandwe, the highest honour bestowed by the ANC on members for dedication, service and selfless commitment.
The lecture will focus on the current trajectory of the National Democratic Revolution (NDR), the teachings of Cde Gwala on the history of the struggle and the fight to build vibrant trade unions during the dark era of apartheid in South Africa.
