The Congress of South African Trade Unions has learned with deep sorrow and shock of the passing-away of another Central Executive Committee member of the federation, SAMWU General Secretary, Comrade Koena Ramotlou. We send our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.
The passing-away of Cde Koena represents another devastating blow for the federation and the working class following the passing-away of NUM General Secretary Cde David Sipunzi.
Cde Ramotlou was a young, dedicated, and outstanding trade unionist who still had so much to offer to the trade union movement and the country. He was known for his passion and energy that he demonstrated in all the battles he led and waged.
He was recently elected General Secretary of the union in its 12th National Congress held in December 2020. He previously served as the union’s Deputy General Secretary since 2015 at the union’s 11th National Congress.
He was pivotal in the rebuilding of SAMWU after a brief period of internal turmoil. He was central in uniting the organization and played a critical role in ensuring that the union convened a united and successful National congress
The federation was still looking forward to his contribution to the struggle against exploitation and for the emancipation of the working class.
We will remember him for his love for Samwu and his dedication to the struggle for the emancipation of Municipal workers and the entire working class.
We will miss his fearlessness and sharp mind. To honour his memory, we promise to dedicate our energy into helping SAMWU to unite and relentlessly wage the struggles in defense of the workers and for the attainment of socialism.
May his soul rest in peace!
