The Congress of South African Trade Unions in the Eastern Cape welcomes the investigation into allegations of maladministration in Alfred Nzo District Municipality
The Federation welcomes the Multi – disciplinary Team of officials from COGTA who are entrusted with responding to complaints by conducting a fact-finding exercise in terms of Section 106(1) (b) of the Local Government Municipal Systems Act 32 of 2000, as amended.
The team has been established to conduct an investigation on the issues raised against Alfred Nzo District Municipality with clear teams of reference. It is expected that both administrative and political leadership in the municipality will be engaged by the team.
COSATU Eastern Cape reiterates its principled position that corruption should be dealt with and all corrupt individuals in the municipality should face the might of the law. There are no holy cows in the fight against corruption. It is for these reasons that we welcome the steps taken by the MEC of COGTA Hon. Xolile Nqatha by designating a team to investigate the matters and make recommendations on an appropriate action to be taken.
The Federation in the Eastern Cape calls for political maturity in dealing with the problems engulfing the Alfred Nzo District Municipality so that a lasting solution can be found. In resolving these challenges, putting the community of Alfred Nzo first is key. Failure to do this will be tantamount to committing political suicide.
We call upon all to support the efforts of the MEC of COGTA to bring about sustainable stability in this District Municipality.
