The South African Emergency Personnel’s Union (SAEPU) is shocked and saddened by yet another Ambulance crew attack. The crew from Umlazi EMS Base, South of Durban in Kwazulu Natal was attacked on their way to attend a call on Sunday by unknown armed men. The perpetrators opened fire on the moving Ambulance and started shooting at its direction. All personnel got injured and taken to hospital to receive treatment. One of the crew members is still in hospital and will be released today. We wish both a speedy recovery.
A case was opened at Umlazi police station and we are calling on police to deepen their investigations and arrest the perpetrators so that justice can be served. It is unfortunate because these cases continue to rise whilst the government has no intensions to prioritize the safety of our personnel.
In Kwazulu Natal these cases also increase because the MEC of Health is not available to engage on how we can support and protect the personnel. We say this because all the meetings we have been trying to convene with her has never happened.
