The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) welcomes the resolve by the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) to absorb the rest of the remaining qualified and competent learners who had been remaining idle for some considerable time.
Following an earlier decision where 923 learners were absorbed in early June 2021, we find the latest move to absorb the rest of the 1068 learners as a progressive move which will ensure the minimisations of some of the core challenges faced by the department, including overcrowding and understaffing, which have been on an increase and resulting in high incidents of security breaches and continued altercations.
It has always been our call that the DCS must employ everyone that has undertaken the required learnership, as it is the only way within which the department can add to its staff complement, which is trained to understand and effectively manage the environment within centres.
These learners are expected to commence their duties from the 1st of August 2021, and we are encouraged that they will add the much-needed value to the department in our common quest to ensure the core function of the DCS, which is the rehabilitation of inmates, is attainable.
