COSATU Free State supports SACCAWU against Massmart for downward variation of employment conditions and union-bashing tactics.
COSATU Free State is fully behind the progressive action taken by SACCAWU to push for the resolution of the dispute it currently has with Massmart. The following are issues that are in dispute which have demonstrated that the company is treating its workers with disdain and utter disrespect:
- Unilateral downward variation of working conditions,
- Unilateral work reorganization,
- Union-bashing tactics,
- Threats, intimidation of workers,
- Unjust retrenchments,
- The overall Walmartisation of Massmart stores.
The following stores will be affected in the province:
- Builders Warehouse,
- Builders Trade Depot
- Builders Superstore
- Game stores
- Makro
- Cambridge food
- Jumbo Stores
- Cash & Carry
We hereby implore upon all workers and community members not to buy in these stores but rather join the picket line in the quest to ensure better working conditions and sustainability of jobs and job security!
As the Federation, we condemn the actions of Massmart in undermining SACCAWU and urge all members to support this course of action to force the company to respect workers as humans!
