COSATU Moans the Passing of Geoff Makhubo

The Congress of South African Trade Unions in Gauteng moans the untimely passing of the Chairperson of the African National Congress in Johannesburg and the Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Geoff Makhubo. Comrade Makhubo was hospitalized two weeks ago and succumbed to COVID-19 complications on 7 July 2021. He served the ANC in different positions for many years. He was the Treasure of the ANC in the region and elected as the Chairperson of Johannesburg in 2018.

He also served as the MMC of Finance under then Mayor, comrade Parks Tau. He led the ANC as the main opposition party in the Johannesburg City Council from 2017-2019. In 2019 a coalition of parties elected him as the City of Johannesburg Mayor. During his short term as the Mayor, he repositioned the City economically and was addressing deep seated electricity and water challenges in the city. Comrade Makhubo was a telephone call away and responded to service delivery challenges with urgency.

Comrade Makhubo worked well with COSATU Cluster in Johannesburg and would consult on deployments, policy direction and challenges in the City. He also worked well with the Alliance in Johannesburg and his leadership, respect and humility will be missed. The residents of Johannesburg and the alliance has lost a selfless cadre.

May His Soul Rest in Peace
