SAMWU mourns the passing of CoJ Mayor Geoff Makhubo

The South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) in the City of Johannesburg wishes to send its sincere and heartfelt condolences to the Makhubo family following the untimely passing of Executive Mayor Cde Geoff Makhubo after what is reported to be Covid-19 complications.

As SAMWU, we are deeply saddened by Cde Makhubo’s passing as he had been an exemplary leader who listened to workers and their demands.  Despite there being disagreements between workers  and the City as an employer, Cde Makhubo always ensured that he delegates people to deal with issues timeously so there is labour peace and stability in the City.

We had hoped and prayed that after his hospitalisation a few days ago, he would be discharged and come back to the City to conclude on other issues that still needed his attention. But more importantly, he had hoped that we will come back and lead the City in delivering services in the middle of a pandemic, a pandemic that has unfortunately cut short his life.

On behalf of the City of Johannesburg’s employees, we once more send out our condolences to the Makhubo family, the City’s political leadership, colleagues and friends. SAMWU leadership  will in due course be in contact with the Makhubo family to personally convey condolences on behalf of the City’s workforce.

May the spirit and soul of Cde Geoff Makhubo rest in eternal peace.
