COSATU mourns the passing of Deputy Minister Hlengiwe Mkhize

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) mourns the passing away of Deputy Minister Hlengiwe Mkhize. We send our heartfelt condolences to her family and colleagues

Cde Hlengiwe Mkhize was a reliable cadre of the movement with a long history in the service of the people of South Africa.  She was an activist and led from the front in the struggle for the liberation of South Africa. She led in the structures of the African National Congress and the United Democratic Front.

After the democratic breakthrough in 1994, she served in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and was an active supporter of former political prisoners.  She served South Africa as Ambassador to the Netherlands and recently she served as Deputy Minister and as a Member of Parliament in different portfolios.

She was particularly passionate about the struggle for the liberation of women. She invested a lot of her energy in the empowerment and liberation of women, as a pivotal activist in the Progressive Women’s Movement of South Africa

She did her work diligently without fanfare but dedicated herself to improving the lives of ordinary South Africans.

The Federation wishes her family strength during this difficult period.
