COSATU Free State on the electricity crisis in MAP Municipality

COSATU Free State is highly disappointed by the failure of Maluti-A-Phofung (MAP) Municipality and ESKOM to provide consistent electricity to the residents of Qwaqwa. The matter has been continuous and has now reached crisis point.

We are also concerned about the security of jobs of workers at this municipality as continued failure by the employer to meet its contractual obligations to their clients, could possibly result in the termination of contracts as well as the closure of factories that employ a significant number of people.

Most workers prefer bulk buying of monthly groceries as a means of saving in these tough economic times. The unavailability of reliable electricity continues to disadvantage workers and threatens their finances. This is unacceptable for both workers and the citizens of Qwaqwa.

As workers in the current capitalist economic system, we have no other way of sustaining our lives except through the sale of our labour power. We will protect our labour power and stand against anything that impedes or interferes with our right to work and our very right to exist.

We have therefore resolved to convene a meeting next week to adopt a program which will put pressure on the municipality to restore the dignity of workers and the working class in MAP.

We stand firmly opposed to the state and its entities for failing to provide basic services to workers and communities!

The struggle continues!
