COSATU GAUTENG statement on the passing of former Johannesburg executive mayor Mpho Moerane

COSATU in the Gauteng province is shocked by the news of the passing of former CoJ Mayor Clr Mpho Moerane. The former mayor was a committed member of the African National Congress and public servant as he held the Regional Treasurer position in the ANC’s Greater Johannesburg region and was the former MMC of Environment and Infrastructure Services. He was also the ANC’s Regional Fundraiser and Leader of Caucus.

His passing comes during a time when leadership in the Johannesburg region is still coming to terms with the death of other comrades who held the position of mayor in the city of Johannesburg. After succumbing to his injuries from a car accident, Moerane is now the third mayor to have passed on within a year following Clr Jolidee Matongo and Clr Molwantwa Makhubu.

Shortly after his appointment as mayor, Moerane vowed to clean up the city, fight corruption, combat maladministration and restore the city to its former stature within the SADC region. He further committed to strengthening relations with stakeholders in the city to fight against crime.

Having grown within the structures of the revolutionary movement, he served the movement with distinction, integrity and commitment and never forgot his roots as a cadre of the revolution.

We wish to send condolences to the family, colleagues, friends and comrades in these trying times.

We also hope that residents and workers within the city will be comforted during these difficult times.

We further urge all motorists to obey the rules of the road, always practice caution when approaching dark areas and must be also on the lookout for pedestrians.

We also urge the municipality to prioritise improving road infrastructure to avoid further fatalities on our roads.
