The South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) in the Eastern Cape province will on Monday, June 6th hold a joint press conference with alliance partners within the province on issues affecting workers and service delivery with particular focus on the Amathole District Municipality and the planned protected strike at the municipality.
Some of the issues that will be outlined includes;
1. The failure of the municipality to pay workers’ salary increases for two years.
2. The failure of the municipality to adopt a budget that speaks to salary increases for workers in the 2022/23 financial year.
3. Retrenchment of workers at the Amatole District Municipality.
4. Non-implementation of notch increases for workers.
5. The union’s demand for the removal of the illegally appointed Municipal Manager.
6. Intimidation tactics by the ADM to silence workers and union leaders through suspensions.
The joint press briefing which will be addressed by leaders of SAMWU, ANC, SACP and SANCO will be held as follows;
