The Gauteng COSATU Young Workers forum fully supports the National Union of Mineworkers Youth Structure’s (NUMYS) march to the Union Buildings in Pretoria on 18 June 2022. This march aims to address the concerns raised by members in NUMYS:
- The call that mines and power stations should not be closed.
- High unemployment as well as retrenchments.
- Mining companies not implementing Social and Labour Plans.
- Arrogant employers during wage negotiations, and
- The current frequency of petrol hikes.
It is with concern that 46 years after the Soweto Youth Uprising, the youth of South Africa and specifically young workers find themselves struggling and at constant loggerheads with employers.
Franz Fanon said, “each generation must discover its mission, fulfil it or betray it.” Gauteng COSATU Young Workers call all young workers to join and strengthen the solidarity between young workers in different sectors. We must make our voices heard and not betray the progress we have made thus far.
Comrades are asked to assemble at Burger’s Park on the corner of Andries and Jacob Mare Streets in Pretoria at 10:00 am.
