COSATU in Gauteng condemns the killing of 14 patrons in Soweto

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) in Gauteng is saddened by the ruthless killing of 14 patrons and the injury of some in Orlando, Soweto at the weekend. This gruesome act reflects moral degeneration in society which requires urgent intervention by the powers that be, society at large, churches and other relevant non-governmental organizations.

This incident occurred while the country is still reeling from the Enyobeni tragedy in the Eastern Cape. Tavern establishments are places of relaxation by many and employment for others. In the aftermath of this, the few employees of the tavern will join the list of the unemployed and a small business will be destroyed.

COSATU in Gauteng calls upon law enforcement agencies to work around the clock to apprehend these heartless criminals who killed innocent souls. We further call on community members to assist law enforcement to trace these murderers.

We send heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wish the injured a speedy recovery.
