Congress Of South African Trade Unions(COSATU) in the Eastern Cape congratulates the South African Medical Association Trade Union(SAMATU) for holding a successful Provincial Congress on 03 September 2022.

The congress was held under the theme “Restoring the voice of doctors in South African healthcare discourse through strong and vibrant unionism.” Deliberations and resolutions of the congress lived up to its theme.

We hope that SAMATU will add its voice and efforts to those of the sister unions in the health sector, the likes of NEHAWU, DENOSA and SAEPU. We are looking forward to their cooperation and coordination of work within the health sector in taking forward workers’ struggles and in accelerating transformation within the healthcare system. These unions must continue to be the eyes and ears of COSATU, the Alliance and broader society in the health sector.

COSATU leadership in the province commits itself to supporting SAMATU in navigating the complexity of challenges that lie ahead. We call upon doctors to find a home in SAMATU for workers’ unity, and for strengthening doctors’ voice while improving their working conditions.
