NUM WELCOMES THE ARBITRATION AWARD OF THE 2021/ESKOM  WAGE DISPUTE

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) welcomes the arbitration award of the 2020/2021 ESKOM wage dispute awarded by the CCMA today after ESKOM unilaterally implemented the 2020/2021 wage negotiations in July 2021.

“The award for this dispute that took more than a year in the arbitration process was received today. We have dealt with this arbitration using our own Full Time Shop Stewards (FTSS) who worked day and night in the preparation, planning and dealing with leading of evidence during the actual arbitration process. Our FTSS demonstrated the understanding of our country’s labour laws. All thanks to the training that the NUM is giving to members and leaders at the Elijah Barayi Memorial Training College (EBMTC),” said William Mabapa, NUM General Secretary.

The CCMA has awarded our members an extra 1.5% on top of the 1.5% that was implemented unilaterally by ESKOM on the 1st of July 2021. The payment of the 1.5% will be backdated from 1st of July 2021. The NUM understands that the CCMA works on the balance of probability and in this case the NUM version was more probable than that of Eskom.

The NUM extends words of thanks to all Part Time Shop Stewards (PTSS), members, NUM officials, FTSS and the NUM leadership in all levels for their contribution in this victory.
