SACCAWU rejects the unbecoming and bad faith conduct that is foreign to the spirit of collective bargaining by Makro Board of Directors and their management which falsely entices workers to accept a 4,5% increase with a condition to resign from the union. The company does this in the midst of a CCMA (LRA Section 150) process which is meant to resolve the current wages and working conditions dispute.
This conduct by the company is further testimony to the emerging conduct by management both in the public and private sectors which flies in the face of orderly industrial relations as espoused by various labour laws and industrial/labour practices which underscore good faith collective bargaining.
SACCAWU has long held a view that Makro under Massmart which is wholly owned by Walmart is only aimed at doing away with all trade unions at their establishment. This is also contained in their internal document named “ManagersToolbox, which is a document designed to operate in a trade union free environment by seriously bashing any union they come across.
Makro collapsed the CCMA process by walking out and never returned. This process, which SACCAWU fully attended and supported, is now on hold because of the intransigent behavior of this company. SACCAWU wishes to reiterate that workers demands at Makro still stand as follows:
1. Across the board increase of R900.00 or 12% whichever is the greater
2. Minimum Wage R8000.00
3. An improvement of Commission from 10% on margin to 20% margin for Sales Person
4. Increase in Category 3 working hours from 160 to 195 per month
5. 13 Cheque to be made separate from the December salary
6. Uniform Allowance R100.00
7. Moratorium on Retrenchments for the duration of the agreement
