COSATU’s statement on the old recirculating propaganda video by Mr. Geordin Hill-Lewis of the Democratic Alliance (DA)

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) has noted an old circulating propaganda video by Mr. Geordin Hill-Lewis of the Democratic Alliance (DA) that was released four years ago attacking the COSATU Eskom Social Compact of 2019. This video is being re-circulated again creating an impression that the current government bailout of Eskom is being done by PIC working with COSATU.

This is totally untrue, the Eskom debt relief of R254bn comes from the fiscus, not the PIC or GEPF, and the Federation is not involved at all in this transaction. We urge workers to ignore the video and stop sharing it.

The re-circulation of this old video is suspicious on the eve of public service employees going on strike. This is meant to create unnecessary panic and sow confusion and division among public service employees.

From its very founding, the Federation committed itself to organising and uniting public service workers and improving their wages and raising their standard of living, and protecting themselves from the insecurities of life. We remain unwavering in that vision and commitment.
