COSATU NORTHERN CAPE SHOCKED AND ANGERED BY THE BRUTAL KILLING OF A YOUNG MAN AND HIS MOTHER IN BRITSTOWN

06 June 2023

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) in the Northern Cape is deeply shocked and angered by the 44-year-old heartless murderer who hacked his 42-year-old wife and his own son (22 years old) with an axe.

The incident happened in the morning of Friday, 02nd June 2023.

It was reported that, after the brutal killings, the man attempted to commit suicide by hanging himself but could not succeed, he was eventually arrested by the police and is currently admitted at a hospital in De Aar for medical care under strict police watch.

COSATU strongly condemns these barbaric acts and calls on communities to work hand in glove with the police to help STOP these unnecessary killings that mostly result from gender-based violence (GBV). We urge communities to report any form of violence and possible signs of GBV to the law enforcement agencies with immediate effect.

The leadership of COSATU is currently visiting the bereaved family today with the Department of Social Development, Department of Health, SAPS, and other community-based organisations to give support and counselling but also to monitor the situation.

The Federation conveys its sincerest condolences to the bereaved family especially the 2 surviving girl children who are only 12 and 15 years old.

May the departed souls of the deceased rest in eternal peace.
