The Congress of South African Trade Unions(COSATU) in the North West has noted with serious concern, continuous allegations of corruption and maladministration in the province.
This is prompted by media reports over the weekend that accuse the provincial government of squandering R520 million irregularly on security tenders. This allegedly occurred in the Department of Social Development and persisted in spite of advice from provincial treasury.
These developments are shocking; more so considering the myriad service delivery challenges engulfing the province. Despite this, some government officials blatantly extort government money instead of prioritising service delivery needs of the province.
This again calls for government to strengthen their strategies of combating crime, corruption and maladministration in the province. Turning a blind eye to such criminal acts should not be tolerated.
As COSATU we believe that criminal cases must be opened against those who were involved in this tendering process, including the companies which were irregularly appointed.
We call on the Premier to be decisive on this matter and act with speed.
