04 July 2023
The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) in the Free State will be embarking on a march to Harmony’s Target Mine Shaft in Allanridge as part of the National Day of Action on 06 July 2023. The Mine took an unorthodox and arbitrary decision to de-recognize some duly elected National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) shopstewards. We view this as a frontal attack on organizational rights of the Affiliate. This is an indication of interference and trickery on the part of the employer as such can only be done by the NUM through its constitution.
We will also be raising issues of high electricity costs and demand the end to load shedding to Eskom. We have noted that electricity tariffs are fast becoming unaffordable with a unit now costing close to R3.00. We will be demanding the reduction in prices to make energy affordable to all workers and communities at large.
Among our demands is also the non-payment or late payment of municipal worker salaries to SALGA as the body that represents the interests of our employers. We have noted that the situation has become very dire in a growing number of municipalities. Serious and urgent intervention is needed on this matter.
COSATU Free State will therefore engage in a march in line with the details below:
Date: 06 July 2023
Time: 09H00
Assembly point: Nyakallong Township entrance, Allanridge
Destination: Target Mine Shaft
The memorandums will be handed over to the management of Target, ESKOM and the SALGA leadership.
The struggle continues!
