The Congress of South African Trade Unions ( COSATU) in the Northern Cape has learnt with great shock, the brutal killing of 2 (two) police officers attached to the Kimberley flying Squad division.
The incident happened on Tuesday, 22nd August 2023 in Kimberley.
The officers ( male and female) were chasing a suspected car thief who ultimately drove into a ditch with a stolen vehicle. The suspect then ran away and was followed by the two officers. The suspect allegedly managed to disarm the policewoman of her R5 Rifle and shot and killed both her and the colleague.
It was established that the suspect had been arrested several times before this incident, brought to courts, but received either fines or suspended sentences.
We echo the same sentiment as our affiliate POPCRU in the province that, the police officers are exposed to very dangerous working conditions, and this is exacerbated by the firearm control laws that restrict them from combating crime optimally.
The continuous release of suspects well known for crime is worrisome. Our criminal justice system is too lax when it comes to dealing with these kind of perpetrators.
We call on the all the law enforcement agencies to act with speed in ensuring that justice is served, but also the SAPS to account to the death of the officers.
The Federation sends its heartfelt condolences to all the bereaved families, friends, and relatives during these trying times.
