Media Alert: COSATU General Secretary Solly Phetoe to join SAMWU march to Matjhabeng Municipality on 7 September

The General Secretary of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), Solly Phetoe, will join the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU)’s march to the Matjhabeng Municipality in the Free State on the 7th September 2023.

Members of the Union, along with workers at the municipality will be delivering a memorandum of demands to the Mayor Thanduxolo Khalipha. Some of the issues raised in the memorandum include:

  • Failure to pay municipal employees the salaries and benefits due to them.
  • Need to provide the relevant health and safety equipment to staff.
  • Outsourcing of municipal services.
  • Gender-Based Violence and sexual harassment in the workplace.
  • Harassment of employees by the Mayor.
  • Political interference in the operations of the Municipality.
  • Unlawful recruitment and nepotism.
  • Payment of salaries in terms of the relevant Municipal grading.
  • Payment of COVID-19 allowance.
  • Need to repeal the Municipal Systems Act banning all municipal employees from holding any office in a political party.
