The Congress of South African Trade Unions(COSATU)in Limpopo is saddened by the devastating road accident which occurred on the 17th of September 2023, in which a bus ferrying mineworkers from Venetia Mine collided with a truck, leading to the loss of twenty-two (22) lives and several injuries. We pass our deepest heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. We also wish a speedy recovery to the survivors of the accident.

We extend a message of empathy to our Affiliate, the National Union of Mineworkers(NUM) and all the mineworkers and members of the community affected by the accident . We call upon the company, De Beers Venetia Mine, to make the necessary psychological and social interventions to the colleagues of the deceased workers and be sensitive to the plight of fellow workers.

Furthermore, we call upon COSATU structures and unions to pledge to embark on actions of solidarity with the families of the deceased and the injured while they grapple with the difficult period of their loss or injury.
