NEHAWU KZN TO EMBARK ON A CET PROVINCIAL DAY OF ACTION

The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union [NEHAWU] in KwaZulu-Natal will embark on a Community Education and Training [CET] Provincial Day of Action directed to the KZN CET College Regional Office in Umngeni Business Park, Durban on Friday, 29 September 2023 to deliver a memorandum to Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Dr Blade Nzimande.

The provincial day of action comes as a direct result of numerous challenges faced by our members in the CET whereby the union has on several occasions highlighted to the administration the plight of our members. As NEHAWU, we have made many attempts to engage the employer and such attempts have not yield any positive results, instead what has transpired is union bashing and harassment of our shopstewards and members hence we have elected to escalate our demands.

We have been clear that the situation of CET in the province cannot remain the same – there’s a lack of infrastructure in all learning centres, mismanagement and lack of proper governance. The outright disregard of our members’ demands clearly indicates that DHET has no interest in resolving the challenges that are besieging the CET sector.

The CET sector is still battling to standardise and harmonise the norms and standards since its migration from the Department of Basic Education to Department of Higher Education and Training, which makes the workers to encounter challenges such as working hours, standardisation of remuneration and miscalculations of REQVs in relation to pay scales.

It is for these reasons that as NEHAWU, we cannot delay the struggle to better the working conditions of our members and workers in general and the improvement of the CET sector by embarking on the planned provincial day of action to deliver a memorandum to DHET.

The memorandum will be delivered under the following details:

Date: Friday September 29, 2023

Time: 13H00

Venue: KZN CET College Office in Umngeni Business Park, Durban
