The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) extends its unwavering solidarity and support to the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) on the International Action Day of the World Federation of Trade Unions on the 3rd of October, held under the theme “No to authoritarianism and the shrinkage of democratic and trade union freedoms.”
As we commemorate this important day, we emphasize the critical importance of safeguarding and strengthening democratic principles and the rights of workers around the world.
The struggle against authoritarianism and the erosion of democratic and trade union freedoms is a shared one. Workers everywhere face challenges to their rights and the freedom to collectively organize, and this Global Day of Action serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight for justice and dignity in the workplace.
COSATU, as an advocate for workers’ rights, firmly supports the objectives set forth by the WFTU for this day of action. We call on governments, employers, and international organizations to heed the following demands:
· Respect for Workers’ Rights: We demand that governments and employers respect and uphold the rights of workers to organize, collectively bargain, and engage in industrial action. Trade union freedoms are fundamental to the protection and advancement of workers’ interests.
· End Authoritarian Practices: We call for an end to authoritarian practices that stifle dissent and suppress the voice of workers. Authoritarianism has no place in a just and equitable society.
· Protect Democracy: We urge governments to strengthen democratic institutions, processes, and values. Democracy is a cornerstone of a just and free society, and it must be defended and nurtured.
· Global Solidarity: We encourage workers and trade unions across the world to stand in solidarity with one another. The challenges we face are interconnected, and our unity is our strength.
COSATU reaffirms its commitment to working alongside the WFTU and our fellow trade unions to realize these demands and ensure that the rights and freedoms of workers are protected and expanded upon. As we observe the October 3 Day of Action, let us remember that the struggle for workers’ rights is a noble one, and together, we can create a world where all workers can live and work with dignity.
In unity and solidarity
