COSATU North West calls for Aaron Motswana to step aside

27 November 2023

The Congress of South African Trade Unions(COSATU) in the North West is horrified to learn that an African National Congress(ANC) MPL who is the Chairperson of the North West Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Premier, Finance, Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, Aaron Motswana, has been arrested.

Motswana has been charged with fraud for misrepresenting the municipality. His charges include the contravention of Section 173 (4) of the Municipal Finance Management Act 56 of 2002 and was granted R10 000 bail.

COSATU understands that the ANC has adopted the step aside resolution, which means that all its members and public representative who have been criminally charged and are appearing in court should resign until they have been cleared from any allegations.

No member of the ANC should be immune to this resolution. The undertaking remains in place as it was not reviewed in the last national conference of the party.

The Federation therefore calls on comrade Motswana to do the honourable thing and step down from his position. Failing which, the ANC must apply its constitution and the guidelines related to the step aside resolution.
