The Congress of South African Trade Unions(COSATU) in the Eastern Cape has received the news of the passing of renowned Eastern London born artist Bulelwa ‘Zahara’ Mkutukana with a deep sense of sadness.
From humble beginnings as a poet called Spinach who performed at Talamanca Music Lounge, Zahara who was a self-taught guitarist rose to prominence and took the world by storm when she featured on the stage with her guitar. She followed the steps of among others, Joan Armatrading and Tracy Chapman as a female singer who played the guitar with such ease and perfection.
During her illustrious career, she won many awards, including the Nigerian Entertainment Award. She collaborated with many iconic artists, including the internationally acclaimed Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Zahara has left a legacy in the music and entertainment industry and left an indelible mark that makes the Eastern Cape proud to have produced a gem in her.
She inspired and injected hope in many children, particularly from the rural villages, evoking determination to follow their dreams.
COSATU expresses sincere sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the Mkutukana family, relatives, friends, colleagues in the music and entertainment industry as well as the entire fans for this sad loss.
Your memory will forever last in many people as they keep you in their hearts.
May her dear soul rest in eternal peace. Hamba kahle.
