The Congress of South African Trade Unions(COSATU) and the South African Municipal Worker’s Union(SAMWU) continue to intervene in the Ditsobotla Local Municipality in the North West province.
This intervention is prompted by the continued challenges which are facing the workers in that municipality in that their salaries continue to be paid late and their third-party deduction continues to be in arrears.
On the 8th of January 2024, the General Secretary of COSATU Solly Phetoe, accompanied by the Provincial Chairperson together with the Provincial Secretary of SAMWU addressed a mass meeting of the workers.
In that meeting the workers committed to be united in confronting the challenges facing them in the municipality.
The workers agreed that the continued deduction of workers third party money and not been transferred to the relevant institutions is tantamount to fraud and corruption.
The workers demanded that their money be transferred to relevant institutions with immediate effect and that all workers who have been paying for services such as health care must be reimbursed their money.
They further agreed to work with COSATU and SAMWU to open the case against the state and demand that the employer meet all obligations of the workers as per their employment contract.
Issued by COSATU and SAMWU
