The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) in Gauteng is saddened and outraged by the tragic incident that occurred during the Back-to-School campaign at Zakariyya Park Community. It is with great sorrow that we confirm the fatal shooting of a Rand Water official and the injury of the City of Johannesburg Chief Whip, Sthembiso Zungu.
The Back-to-School campaign which was meant to be a joyful and uplifting event for the community, was marred with this senseless act of violence. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased Rand Water official. We also wish the City of Johannesburg Chief Whip Sthembiso Zungu a speedy and full recovery.
COSATU condemns all forms of violence, especially when it occurs in spaces dedicated to community engagement and positive initiatives. Every individual has the right to participate in such events without fear for their safety.
We call on law enforcement agencies to swiftly and thoroughly investigate this incident and urge them to leave no stone unturned in bringing the perpetrators to justice. The safety and security of our communities and those who serve them must be a top priority.
We further call on the community to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement in their efforts to apprehend the individuals responsible for this heinous act. Together, we can ensure that such acts of violence have no place in our society.
