30 January 2024
The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) calls on all its members within the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) across correctional facilities to actively encourage inmates to register to vote in the upcoming National and Provincial elections.
The South African Constitution states that every eligible adult citizen has the right to vote. Placement in correctional facility does not abrogate this right which has been exercised by inmates without exception since the general elections in 1999.
Preparations for inmates’ voter registration commences for the duration of this week, from 30 January to the 1st of February 2024 ahead of the national and provincial elections.
We acknowledge that many inmates do not keep their identity documents (ID) in their possession and it is for this reason that we also encourage their families to make necessary arrangements by delivering the following forms of identification:
• Green-barcoded ID
• Smartcard ID or
• Temporary identification certificate (TIC) to correctional facilities.
