The Congress of South African Trade Unions(COSATU) in Mpumalanga unequivocally condemns the appalling acts of violence that resulted in the tragic killing of an African National Congress Cllr, Thabo Ngwenya and the assault on his wife. Such senseless acts are abhorrent and have no place in our society.
At the time of his tragic demise Cde Thabo was serving as both a councillor and Chairperson of the Municipal Accounts Committee (MPAC) in the Nkomazi Local Municipality. He also served his organizations, the ANC and ANC Youth League in different capacities, which included being a Branch Executive Committee (BEC) member of the ANC in ward 17 Nkomazi Sub-Region and a member of the ANC Youth League Regional Executive Committee(REC), in eHlanzeni Region.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the victims, and we stand in solidarity with them during this time of immense grief and shock.
We call upon the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that those responsible for these reprehensible actions are swiftly brought to justice. Violence against anyone, including elected officials and their families, is utterly unacceptable and undermines the fabric of our community.
Together, we must strive to foster a culture of respect, peace, and safety for all members of society.
