COSATU Eastern Cape is saddened by the collapse of the Ngcobo building wall

The Congress of South African Trade Unions(COSATU) in the Eastern Cape is saddened by the building wall collapse at Ngcobo which resulted in the death of five(5) people and 14 others injured on 10 May 2024. The Federation conveys its deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured.

The front wall partially collapsed from the top and bricks fell on top of the veranda of the building and affected those who were in that space. This tragic incident has turned the spotlight on the safety of some buildings in the Central Business District of A.B. Xuma Municipality.

The Local Municipality and Provincial Department of Public Works have committed to follow up on the matter and leave no stone unturned to ensure those at fault take responsibility of the disaster. Structural engineers from the Department of Public works have begun their investigation and promised that the investigation would be concluded in 30 days. The Local Municipality vowed to step up monitoring compliance of the buildings with Health and Safety to allay concerns of similar incidents in future.

We are encouraged by the fact that the Provincial Department of Social Development has commenced with offering psycho-social support to affected families and individuals. Government in partnership with local businesses is supporting the families in this hour of need in alleviating the burden of burying their loved ones in dignity.

A joint Memorial Service will be held at Engcobo Indoor Sports Centre today, 15 May 2024 at 10h00

May the dear souls of the departed rest in eternal peace.
