The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) joins the working class in the US and millions of American people in their firm stand against the US Congress decision to invite Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu, who is facing war crimes against the people of Palestine, Gaza in particular.
This has seen the most resolute, effective and powerful mobilisations and acts of solidarity in a long time and COSATU sends strong fraternal salutations and calls on all workers of the world to unite against imperialist wars of occupation, racism and bullying by the military industrial complex, which is the assault on the rights and freedoms of workers, communities and humanity all over the world.
It is unbelievable that the US with all its claims as the free world, would invite a war criminal in blatant acts of complicity and continue to spend billions of dollars, arms and sophisticated military technology in a war that has been declared genocide by the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
The colonial occupation of Palestine by Israel, is now longer than 75 years and heightened since October 2023, resulting in the catastrophic murder of thousands of children, women and men. This led to the ICJ declaring the Israeli invasion as crimes of genocide.
COSATU also welcomes the initiative that resulted in the adoption of the Beijing Declaration which unites the Palestinian liberation forces to act together against the crimes of apartheid, genocide and wars of invasion committed by Israel and supported by global imperialist forces.
COSATU is working with progressive international trade unions towards a revitalisation of the global solidarity movement, particularly bringing together workers of the global south for a new and just anti-imperialist world for Peace, justice and development. In this regard, the African continent is an important axis of our critical momentum.
